Who Kelley Is

My name is Kelley Wake. I’m in first year journalism at Rhodes University South Africa. I’m here to learn how to use the tools I have been equipped with. I want to learn to use these tools to open up a world that has not been visioned yet. I love life and see opportunities at every turn. I believe that everything happens of a reason. I love people and analysing their cause and on world phenomena. I love to laugh, have fun and try to accept people as long as they are happy. I want to live life to the fullest.
I see the world as a hub of knowledge. I believe the world is created by ideologies of the power elite. These ideologies are used to control the majority who are less powerful. I believe that even though we are the less powerful majority in society we have the decision and knowledge to make the best of the world we live in. I believe that people make their world what they want it to be. We are constantly given opportunities and faced with decisions. We need to choose what is right for us and grab opportunities. When we make bad choices we must make the best of it and never live with regrets.
I believe that journalism in the world is a tool that should be used to open the minds of people who are controlled and manipulated in believing harmful knowledge. A journalist has the ability and the power to do this through mass media. Journalism is the pressure that can stop negative world forces and give knowledge to those that do not have so that may learn to live in the best way possible in the society and uncontrollable situation they are in. Journalism can also have a negative presence in the world when it is used the wrong way to manipulate those into believing the values that only benefit the power elite not the people themselves. I want to use journalism to uplift and share knowledge with those who do not have. My first passion is the continent I live on, Africa. I want to help free Africa from the manipulative power elite of the world.
Our blog is about the study of journalism to acquire a degree. We will be discussing how the world of journalism is changing. It is no longer in the hands of the well educated elite but is been given to the public. People can become journalists without a degree and we will be discussing our point of view on this as journalism students and how it is affecting us.

Journalism at Rhodes

By Philippa Bradbury

Hello. My name is Philippa Bradbury. I am currently a first year student studying Journalism. I am a quiet, organised person who just wants to write and Journalism seems like a wonderful way in which to do this. Do any of you really know why you want to do journalism? Do you love writing, do you want a job that is different from the more mundane, 9-5 kind of jobs or do you just not know what else to do at the moment? Whatever one’s reason is for choosing journalism as a career, I’m sure the one thing we can all agree on is that it is a hugely competitive world out there and we need the best qualifications offered to us.

Or do we?

Most students, especially those of us who are in our first year of Journalism at Rhodes University, are waiting for the mighty cut at the end of the year to determine whether we are on the road to graduating with Journalism as a major or not. It is a hugely stressful time with exams looming and Journalism portfolios to hand in and the question on everybody’s mind is “What happens if I do not get in?” You might be a good, diligent student who works hard and hands his/her work in on time, all the time but that does still not guarantee you a place in Journalism 2. Herein lies the crux of our blog, “What the hell?!” We want to address the issue that not everyone needs to do a Journalism degree or to study journalism to embark on it as a career path because when we take the matter down to its barest, smallest form with no frills or fancies, journalism is about good, solid writing and not about your degree.

Being a Journalism student from Rhodes gives one quite a bit of prestige. I know for a fact when I visited the BBC in July 2009, the head of the Africa Section was an old Rhodent and most people, even internationally, have heard of the Rhodes Journalism and Media Studies prowess. On the other hand, most people have also heard of Harvard but that does not mean that everyone who does not go to Harvard is not as every bit as successful as those who do.
If you all manage to get into Journalism and remain there for the years to come then that is amazing and obviously an honour but for those who do not, what the hell, keep writing and make it another way.

My views on journ!

My name is Tatum Holloway. I am in first year, studying journalism at Rhodes University. I love to write and talk and this is why I think that journalism is a fantastic career! I would like to stay at Rhodes and get my honours. I intend to go into political journalism and in my lifetime I would like to experience careers in TV, radio and print journalism. I hate being stuck in one place or position for any length of time and this is why I intend to move around in my career a lot.
I am a very passionate person and I have a desire to make a difference in the world. I think that journalism is a wonderful tool with which to do this. I love people and think that they have the right to know the truth about issues that affect them. I also love thinking and in my writing I would love to be able to stimulate thought and challenge people’s views.
We have decided to create a blog about our views and experiences as students entering the journalism field. Our blog is called "what the hell?" and here we intend to write about our experiences as amateur journalists. This means that the blog will be aimed and students, those studying journalism in particular. I am a very easy going, fun-loving person and I want this to be apparent in my blogging, which means that we intend to keep a light hearted tone and make sure that we never get too whiney or serious. We also want our blog to have a hint of humour in it this will avoid too much negativity and complaining.
I think that the world is a wonderful place, a place that is filled with lots of beauty and amazing things. I get irritated with people who turn petty issues into big deals and I think that there is so many good things to concentrate on and this is what we intend to do. There is also a lot of pain and suffering in the world and I enjoy reflecting and learning about these things. I don’t feel that this blog is an appropriate place for serious issues as of the time being. We will be open to change as time goes on but for now we plan to keep it light-hearted.
This blog should be a fun-read, and I am sure that many students around the world will be able to identify with the issues we will be discussing. It should also be a very good learning experience for us and I am looking forward to writing and expressing our opinions on this blog!
